Cupping therapy is becoming increasingly popular, especially with professional athletes and celebrities. The cups create a suction and increase blood flow in order to repair the muscles involved. This is a great therapy for competition prep and recovery, and also for general maintenance while training. You may be left with “cupping marks” which look similar to bruises, but they do not hurt and usually disappear within 3-7 days.
Gua sha has similar effects to cupping but can be done on smaller muscle groups and more pinpointed areas. It also is a great treatment for the common cold. This modality uses gua sha tool (usually a smooth, flat piece of plastic, bone or stone) to “scrape” along muscles or channels.
